1. Regular Eye Exams

Early detection is key to preventing and treating eye diseases. Even if you think your vision is perfect, regular eye exams can uncover hidden issues before they progress. Adults should undergo a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years, depending on their age, risk factors, and whether they currently wear glasses or contact lenses.

2. Protect Your Eyes from the Sun

Long-term exposure to sunlight can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye conditions. Wearing sunglasses that block ultraviolet rays is important to protect your eyes against sun damage.

3. Eat Eye-Healthy Foods

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids can help protect your vision. Antioxidants can also help to protect your eyes from diseases. So, make sure your diet is colourful and varied to benefit your eyes.

4. Take Breaks from Screens

Digital screens can strain your eyes, leading to dryness, fatigue, and blurry vision. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This simple habit can significantly reduce eye strain from prolonged screen use.

5. Stay Hydrated

Adequate hydration is essential for maintaining the health of your eyes. It can help reduce dryness and irritation. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to keep your body and eyes well-hydrated.

6. Quit Smoking

Smoking is harmful not just to your lungs but also to your eyes. It increases the risk of developing cataracts, macular degeneration, optic neuropathy and other eye conditions.

7. Manage Co-Morbidities

Conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure can affect your eye health. Managing these conditions through diet, exercise, and medication can prevent eye problems associated with these diseases.

8. Practice Good Hygiene

Always wash your hands before touching your eyes, especially when inserting or removing contact lenses. Keep your eyewear clean and avoid rubbing your eyes, as this can transfer germs and cause infections.
